Ms. Evans' Example Essay:

When I was a kid, my life aspirations included being a ninja turtle and being a professional soccer player. Although I cannot say I successfully transformed into a crime fighting turtle or play soccer for the US national team, I can say that I love my life.

Growing up I always understood that to have opportunities in the world, I needed to be educated. For this reason, I studied hard so that I could graduate high school and go on to college. College, however, was the most difficult in my life – late nights studying, being home sick, unfamiliar with new situations, new people and scraping by with little money. The odds were stacked against me to potentially have me give up and sink to a low point in my life. Thankfully, this was not the case. It was this moment in my life when I understood I was in charge of my future and attitudes. I could interpret new and challenging situations as something to be depressed about or I could view these as opportunities for growth. I chose the latter. I opened my eyes to understand that the world is beautiful, life is wonderful and with the right supports, I could achieve anything. My family was always available for support and my friends for laughter. It was during this time of my life that I established a list of rules to live my life by. The most important one – even still – was to never take myself too seriously. Along with the many other rules – love everyone and everything. Laugh uncontrollably, until it hurts and you're fighting for air. Plan ahead so you can alleviate any stress that will come from winging it. Be healthy – don't pollute your body and mind with garbage. Be creative and collaborate with others. Achieve greatness but never take sole credit for team efforts. Be innovative – when you're missing the tools you think you need, come up with others. Appreciate others and let them know they are appreciated. Your words have the potential to make someone's day. Clean up after your own messes; No one wants to walk through the trash you have left, nor is it anyone's responsibility but your own. Push yourself to your limits, always. Have a clear vision of what you want and don't let others limit your dreams or stand in your way.

It is these rules that transformed my life for the better and allowed me to see the greatness the world offers and the power each individual in this world has.I'm left thinking of my favorite quote spoken by Gandhi - “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.” The way I live my life may not be grand, but it is filled with love, optimism and laughter. You do not have to be a hero to change the world, you need to be an individual with a tender heart who strives to make a positive difference in others' lives. This I believe is the way humanity can come together to make the world a better place.
